On Sunday, August 25, 1940, Pastor Long and a group of followers met at the O.J. Worchester home at 522 Broad Street for services at 11:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. The next Sunday, Sunday School was started.
On September 8, 1940, the first church service was held in the Seven Day Advent Church, which was rented for more than 9 years. On September 18, 1941, the first officers were elected.
At a special meeting held Tuesday evening, April 23, 1942, Calvary Baptist Church voted to join the GARB. The constitution was adopted September 30, 1941. The building fund for a church of our own was started October 1943.
Pastor Long was with us 3 years. A farewell dinner for him was held on October 26, 1943. Pastor Long's last Sunday was October 31, 1943.
Pastor Oliver Whitson assumed duties at the church on November 7, 1943. Because of family circumstances and responsibilities, he terminated his duties on November 14, 1943.
Pastor R. M. Shanks moved into a rented parsonage at 1317 Prairie Street. He preached his first sermon at the church March 5, 1944. Pastor Shanks then moved into the parsonage at 1033 Spring Street (then called the Hendrickson property) on April 1, 1944. Pastor Shanks served us until March 27, 1947.
Pastor Issac Johnson was called. His first sermon was June 1, 1947. Pastor Johnson was ordained in the rented Seven Day Advent Church on July 29, 1947. Pastor Johnson served until November 15, 1951 and saw the church on 6th Street dedicated.

On June 6, 1945, the lot at 6th and Main which the church purchased was cleared of trees. The city council would not give a permit to build a church because of zoning. The lot at 6th and Main was sold October 14, 1947, and a lot at 6th and Hamlin was bought.
A church in Sully was bought and a permit was issued for $15,000 in December, 1947. It took about one month to get the church ready and move it to Grinnell. It came 34 miles. It was on the road 12 days, arrived in Grinnell on September 1, 1949, and was set on the foundation November 15, 1949.
The first sermon in the church was March 5, 1950. The church was dedicated on July 25, 1950.
Pastor Leeper began duties March 23, 1952. A bus was purchased March 15, 1953. A contract was made to buy a parsonage June 1953. Pastor Leeper served until December 18, 1953.
